Charlotte is the center of the nation’s fifth largest urban region and economic hub of the New South. Located in south-central North Carolina, it has been noted as America’s most livable community and it’s easy to see why. A vibrant job market, tree-lined and clean streets, excellent schools, a generous climate and convenient access to the best beaches and mountains in the East combine to make Charlotte one of America’s premier cities.
Our strong, diverse economy fuels unparalleled growth. Even though many cities across America are experiencing population loss, Charlotte grows at a rate nearly twice the national average. We have become a prime destination and our business climate is a big reason why. Over 300 of the Fortune 500 are represented in the Queen City with companies like Bank of America, Wachovia, Goodrich, Duke Energy, Nucor and Sonic Automotive headquartered here. The city, state and public have responded to the challenge of population growth with significant investment in infrastructure including road and airport expansion, affordable housing and public transportation. Utilities are cheap and plentiful due to abundant resources and wise resource management.
We have become an arts and entertainment mecca with over 3 million people visiting our attractions annually. From botanical gardens to state-of-the-art performance and science centers, from theme parks to world-class restaurants and area wineries, Charlotte has the style to sustain, educate, entertain and inspire. And, for those of us who love to shop, Charlotte is the place to be. Virtually every major retailer is represented along with upscale boutiques, antique villages, art galleries and outdoor markets.
Our school system is the 23rd largest in the nation and offers learning options from traditional schools to magnet schools with specialized curriculum. Higher education in the Charlotte area is outstanding. The University of North Carolina at Charlotte and Central Piedmont Community College are two of the best education values in the nation. Johnson & Wales University brings world-class culinary flair and Davidson College has achieved consistent designation as one of the best liberal arts schools in the country.
Recreation is a hallmark of the Charlotte experience. Mecklenburg County hosts more than 200 parks and facilities where you can enjoy outings of every conceivable type. More than 50 golf courses dot the landscape, some drawing annual professional tournaments.
There are hundreds of public tennis courts and within 20 minutes of Charlotte, there are two major lakes with excellent fishing, boating and swimming. In addition, our city is a national sports center. The NFL Carolina Panthers and NBA Bobcats are based here. 90 percent of NASCAR Nextel Cup racing teams are headquartered within 50 miles of the city. Triple-A baseball, minor league hockey and resurgent university and high school competitions round out our sports scene.
Our economy and array of options for any lifestyle allow Charlotte to celebrate an expanding mosaic of cultures, faiths and races. Individuals from all over the nation and the world choose to make their home in the Queen City. Growing communities of Hispanic, Asian and African-descent populations have expanded awareness, cultural and business opportunities. While its religious landscape remains predominantly Christian, other religious communities are visible allowing adherents to practice their beliefs in a climate of tolerance.
