Matthews began as a small farming community in the 1800s. Cotton farmers completely cleared the land of trees, leaving nothing but stumps as far as the eye could see and establishing the community’s first name as Stumptown. By the turn of the 20th century the town was developing rapidly and Matthews today is a town of nearly 25,000 residents. It is located approximately 10 miles southeast of Charlotte Center City and remains a fast-growing community thanks to its proximity to the metro area.
The town offers direct access to Highways 74, 51, I-85, I-485 as well as to the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport. Public transportation connects Matthews with Charlotte with buses including express service for commuters. |

Its downtown evokes small-town charm and residents enjoy an excellent quality of life with access to Charlotte shopping and entertainment and ample recreation opportunities at its seven parks. It is a tight-knit community with a full array of local services, a low crime rate and affordable housing. Matthews provides a modern hospital facility, EMS service and urgent-care centers. Matthews residents have excellent education choices.
There are four elementary schools, a middle school, newly constructed high school and a variety of faith-based schools. Matthews continues to be one of the state’s most affluent and sought-after communities and a fantastic place to live and work.
